In Figure 4.3, a sixth grade girl filled out a specific formafter she had defaced a classmate’s desktop. The cause for her behavior was displacement of her anger frombeing called a name that she resented. In getting this sixth grader to fill out the particular form, the teacher’s goalwas to foster the child’s reflection onwhat classroom rule was broken, why the child broke it, and for the child to realize that retaliation per se is not the logical solution to the offense of being called a name. What is positive about logical solutions in the context of the whole-school approach to social competence is that a logical solution differs frompunishment and is based on goodwill. It is focused on the present and future behavior. Based on Nelson, Lott, and Glenn (2000), a logical solution has four essential attributes: “(a) it relates to the behavior, (b) it is respectful of all participating parties, (c) it contains reasonable expectations, and (d) it aims to build relationships.”
